Causes of Sensitive Teeth
The leading causes of teeth sensitivity are:
- Eating acidic foods and beverages on a regular basis leading to enamel erosion. Acidic foods include:
- Citrus fruits such as Oranges, Grapefruits, Lemons/Limes
- Pickled products
- Sports and Energy Drinks
- Orange Juice
- Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush resulting in gum recession and root exposure over time
- Teeth grinding and clenching that can wear away the enamel or crack the tooth
- Tooth decay as a result of erosion of the enamel
In healthy teeth, porous tissue inside the teeth called dentin is protected by your gums and by a hard enamel outer layer. However, dentin can become exposed due to receding gums, cracked/chipped teeth or erosion. Microscopic holes in the dentin, called tubules, connect to the nerve. When irritated by certain foods and beverages, the tubules trigger discomfort in the form of pain and tingling – what we call sensitivity.
Help for a Sensitive Mouth
To prevent gum recession and enamel erosion we recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Desensitizing toothpaste can help relieve mild and temporary teeth sensitivity.
